Subject and to be in Spanish (Part III: to be 'ESTAR')

There are two 'to be' in Spanish the first one SER we've discussed about it in the previous post. Now we're going to find out more about the other one 'to be' which is ESTAR.

to remind you again that SER is being used for something that is eternal or likely last from born till dead (like name, gender, origin) and also to tell about time. Then the function of ESTAR is to tell something temporary, or example: feeling/condition and location.

Now, before we go to example, we'll see the verb ESTAR after we conjugate with its subject.

LOCATIONS
The idea here is that when we are in one place, we are not gonna stand or be there forever right? So we include this as a temporary condition.

example
  • Estoy en mi casa : I am in home
  • ¿Donde está el libro? : Where is the book?
  • Estamos aqui, en la parque : We are here, in the park

NOTE!
When talking about location of an event or party, don't use ESTAR, but use SER.
  • La boda de mi hermana es en iglesia cerca de mi casa : My sister's wedding is in the church near my house
  • La fiesta es en la playa : T he party is in the beach

CONDITION
People have feeling or condition that commonly stay for temporary time, not forever. So in this case we should use ESTAR. Take an examplelike, right now i feel sad, but i won't be sad forever. So it is temporary. Here's more example:
  • Estoy muy triste : I am very sad
  • Mis padres están enfermos : My parents are sick
  • Ariadna está muy cansado porque trabaja mucho: Ariadna is very tired because she works a lot
